What's A Wheaten Terrier?

A Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a breed of dog that originated in Ireland. Wheatens were originally bred to help out on the farm. The males grow to around 18-19 inches in height and the females become 17-18 inches. Their lifespan is about 12 to 14 years. Bono, our old wheaten terrier, lived healthily and happily until he was around 12 years old. We miss him very much. Males will weigh around 35-40 pounds and females will be approximately 30-35 pounds.

More About Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers

Wheatens need to be groomed often to make sure their fur coats don't become matted. Wheatens are very friendly and happy dogs. They become very excited when their owners return home and are known to jump up and down to greet them - the Wheaten Greetin'. Wheatens can be stubborn and are energetic even in to their later years.

Wheaties are hypoallergenic, which makes them a good choice for people who are prone to allergies. Wheaties rarely - if ever - shed but you do have to brush them on a fairly regular basis. Wheatens are very good with kids and make wonderful family dogs.
